Mussel Rock or Liliem

Mussel Rock is sometimes known as Bruhle’s Point. It is about 2 miles south of Westport. It is a long narrow neck of land ending in two flat points. The name Lilem is from the Native Americans who considered it a sacred spot among all the bands and tribes. The mussels at Lilem were a very important part of all the tribal economies of the area and they were found in such abundance here that a general amnesty was observed. Tribes that would never cross into each other’s territory were granted safe passage and allowed to stay undisturbed at a campsite near the mussel beds.
